Cocaine

Cocaine

Because most individuals suffering from cocaine addiction are often unable to stop using the drug on their own, there is a tremendous need for addiction treatment programs to help them overcome their addiction.   Cocaine abuse rehabilitation centers provide comprehensive care that addresses the physical and psychological addiction to this potentially deadly drug. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), cocaine is a very powerful stimulant that comes in both powder and rock form. Therapy has been shown to be the most effective way to successfully treat cocaine addiction.

What Are the Different Types of Cocaine Abuse Rehabilitation?

There are a number of different types of cocaine abuse rehab options currently available throughout the United States.   The two primary styles of treatment are residential and outpatient rehab.
  • •Residential cocaine rehabilitation.  With these programs, the individual moves into the treatment center so they may receive 24/7 care from addiction treatment professionals.   Residential rehab is ideal for those individuals who live in an environment that contributes to their cocaine use.   The treatment center is a place for these men and women to get away from it all and live in a place – for a month or longer – that is warm, supportive and completely devoted to their recovery from cocaine addiction.
  • •Outpatient cocaine rehabilitation. Many individuals are simply unable to put their lives on hold so they can enter a residential addiction treatment program. For these men and women, outpatient cocaine rehab is an appealing alternative, as they can attend treatment sessions during the day, but then return home in the evening. The individual must be able to maintain sobriety at home – or when not in counseling – in order for this style of program to work.
In addition to the core treatment types listed above, there are also a number of different specific cocaine rehab programs that are designed to help specific individuals, including:
  • •Teen Rehab. For young people who have developed an addiction to cocaine, these programs deal with adolescent-specific issues such as peer pressure, self-image problems and coping with academic pressure.
  • •Rehab for Women. Gender-specific treatment programs that speak to the unique needs of women living with cocaine addiction. Women may feel safer in these programs.
  • •Dual Diagnosis Rehab. These programs help at-risk individuals who are suffering from co-occurring cocaine addiction and mental illness.

Cocaine Detox

Although most cocaine rehab programs include a detox element as part of treatment, this is not as crucial a component of care as it would be for opiates such as Vicodin or heroin. The reason for this is because cocaine addiction is primary a psychological disease.  There is debate as to whether there is a physical element to cocaine dependence but the majority of time spent in cocaine rehab will be devoted to counseling and therapy.

Addiction Counseling During Drug Rehab

Because cocaine addiction is considered to be, primarily, a psychological addiction, counseling is the most important part of the recovery process.   There are three major types of cocaine addiction counseling available at most facilities:  individual, group and family therapy.
  • Individual counseling.  These are private one-on-one sessions where the individual meets with a therapist to privately discuss the causes of their cocaine addiction and develop abilities that allow them to respond more positively to triggers so they don’t return to cocaine use.
  • •Group counseling. In group therapy, the individual meets with other recovering individuals in the programs to share stories and support one another in their recovery efforts.   For many, this helps to build a solid support system which they can rely on when they are tempted to relapse.
  • •Family counseling.   When an individual has a cocaine addiction, it impacts everyone in the family unit.   Family counseling is a chance to clear the air about past transgressions and to rebuild relationships on a new foundation of trust.

Aftercare Programs for Cocaine Addiction

When an individual graduates drug rehab, they still face a number of challenges.  The newly minted recovering individual may return to their environment only to find temptation, broken relationships and other concerns. Aftercare programs help the individual deal with these daily occurrences by providing advice and support from people who have been there or people who are currently going through the same circumstances. Among the most common cocaine aftercare programs are:
  • Continued therapy.  Many individuals will continue with individual or group therapy sessions once they have exited a formal treatment program. These sessions can act as refreshers to help the individual maintain sobriety, or they can simply provide support and encouragement as the individual continues to live a sober life.
  • Support groups. Twelve-step groups are a common type of support group used by those who exit rehab. These programs, which are available in almost every city in the United States, can be a godsend for those who need to reach out and hear words of encouragement from others. Those recovering from cocaine addiction may wish to participate in Narcotics Anonymous (NA) or Cocaine Anonymous (CA).
  • Sober living facilities. Drug addiction strips away an individual’s ability to enjoy self-reliance and responsibility.   Life at a sober living home is a chance to rebuild these facets of life by having the individual live in a safe and clean place that also requires them to be part of a group – with shared chores and responsibilities.  Many individuals will stay at a sober living home for weeks following treatment until they feel emotionally and financially stable enough to move on with their lives. Sober living homes are wholly free of drugs or alcohol. Only those in recovery live in these homes.
